GOOD HABITS ARE AS ADDICTIVE AS BAD HABITS, AND A LOT MORE REWARDING.Harvey MacKay
SUCCESFUL PEOPLE AREN'T BORN THAT WAY. THEY BECOME SUCCESSFUL BY ESTABLISHING THE HABIT OF DOING THINGS UNSUCCESSFUL PEOPLE DON'T LIKE TO DO.
William Makepeace Thackeray
WE ARE WHAT WE REPEATEDLY DO. EXCELLENCE THEN IS NOT AN ACT, BUT A HABIT.
Aristotle
Tisbury School's vision for your children is;
To prepare confident, resourceful, life-long learners - with support of the family.
and one of the ways we believe we can achieve this is to model, teach and give opportunities to practice the HABITS OF MIND.
These 16 Habits were identified by a very astute man, Dr. Art Costa. He looked at the behaviours of the successful people in the world in an attempt to find out what made them successful and found that all of these succesful people exhibited similar Habits. Art Costa first called them intelligent behaviours, but changed the name recently to Habits of Mind. Art Costa didn't invent the Habits, they have been around forever, but he did identify and name them so that schools can actively help your children to become more successful, or to put it another way, help the children of Tisbury School achieve our vision.
As you will see when you read about them below, they are not just Habits for children, they are Habits that we all can nurture in ourselves and develop.
1 PERSISTENCE Stick to it!
Perservering in task through to completion; remaining focussed. Looking for ways to reach your goal when stuck. Not giving up.
2 MANAGING IMPULSIVITY Take your time!
Thinking before acting; remaining calm, thoughtful and deliberative.
3 LISTENING WITH UNDERSTANDING AND EMPATHY Understand others!
Devoting mental energy to another person's thoughts and ideas; make an effort to perceive anothers point of view and emotions.
4 THINKING FLEXIBLY Look at it another way!
Being able to change perspectives, generate alternatives, consider opinions.
5 THINKING ABOUT YOUR THINKING (Metacognition) Know your knowing!
Being award of your own thoughts, strategies, feelings and actions and their effects on others.
6 STRIVING FOR ACCURACY Check it again!
Always doing your best. Setting high standards. Checking and finding ways to improve constantly.
7 QUESTIONING AND PROBLEM SOLVING How do you know?
Having a questioning attitude; knowing what data are needed and developing questioning strategies to produce those data. Finding problems to solve.
8 APPLYING PAST KNOWLEDGE TO NEW SITUATIONS Use what you learn!
Accessing prior knowledge; transferring knowledge beyond the situation in which it was learned.
9 THINKING AND COMMUNICATING WITH CLARITY AND PRECISION Be clear!
Striving for accurate communication in both written and oral form; avoiding over generalizations, distortions, deletions and exaggerations.
10 GATHER DATA THROUGH ALL SENSES Use your natural pathways!
Pay attention to the world around you. Gather data through all the senses; taste, touch, smell, hearing and sight.
11 CREATING, IMAGINING AND INNOVATING Try a different way!
Generating new and novel ideas, fluency, originality.
12 RESPONDING WITH WONDERMENT AND AWE Have fun figuring it out!
Finding the world awesome, mysterious and being intrigued with phenomena and beauty.
13 TAKING RESPONSIBLE RISKS Venture out!
Being adventuresome; living on the edge of one's competence. Try new things constantly.
14 FINDING HUMOUR Laugh a little!
Finding the whimsical, incongruous and unexpected. Being able to laugh at oneself.
15 THINKING INTERDEPENDENTLY Work together!
Being able to work with and learn from others in reciprocal situations. Team work.
16 REMAINING OPEN TO CONTINUOUS LEARNING Learn from experiences!
Having humility and pride when admitting we don't know; resisting complacency.
As you can see from reading the Habits they make a lot of sense. However, we do need to put them in to 'CHILD SPEAK' and we are doing this in a variety of ways. This term there are three Habits that teachers are talking about with their classes and all relate to the Key Competency of THINKING.
THINKING FLEXIBLY
QUESTIONING AND PROBLEM POSING
METACOGNITION

TEACHERS
Room 1 Year 4/5/6
Miss Anita Brown (Deputy Principal)
B.Ed. (Tchng)
{file://localhost/Users/teacher/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems/msoclip1/01/clip_image007.jpg} I believe learning is child centered and that individual needs must be met. All learning styles are catered for in classroom programmes so that life long learning and skills are fostered. I value diversity and risk taking in learners. A safe learning environment is provided for with a hands on programme in the classroom.
Room 2 Year 3/4
Miss Kate Mackay
B.Ed (Tchng)
I believe teaching should be child centred empowering students to take increasing responsibility for their learning and provide them with experiences which are worthwhile. Experiences should be related to everyday life and be related to what is happening within the world at the current time. These experiences will motivate them and make them become life long learners.
Room 3 Year 1/2
Miss Emma Begg
{file://localhost/Users/teacher/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems/msoclip1/01/clip_image009.jpg} I aim to create a positive learning environment that is interesting, meaningful and fun. Communication
At Tisbury School we like to keep you informed of your child/children’s progress and development. We have an open door policy so feel free to come in at any time to see what your child/children are doing. If you wish to discuss anything with your child’s teacher, or the principal, please give us a courtesy call to arrange a time.
Meet the teacher or parent/teacher interviews are held in term 1.
We send out written reports at the end of terms 2 and 4.
Towards the end of term 3 we have a parent/child evening.
There is a weekly newsletter that goes home to all families on a Thursday to let you know what is happening around the school. This newsletter also has community notices in it.
We run a transition to school programme for children who are soon to be starting school. These soon to be new entrants spend the afternoons, then mornings, getting to know their teacher, the school and the other children.
Board meeting is every third Thursday at 7.30pm in the staffroom. A Board Link goes home after every Board meeting to keep you informed of what is happening at Board level.
We have a Parent Support Group that has occasional get-togethers for parents and helps out on days such as Pet Day when extra hands are always needed.

Pick up and drop off
Tisbury School is on a very busy intersection in a 100km/hr speed zone. For this reason we have the following rules.
No child is allowed out of the school grounds unless under adult supervision.
At the end of school children are released into their parent/caregiver’s care by the teacher on duty.
No child leaves the school unaccompanied unless they have parental permission.
PARKING
There are 2 car parks, one in front of the school and the other on the opposite side of the road. In summer, and when the weather is dry, cars can park in the paddock as well.
Care is needed at all times in the car parks, children are unpredictable at the best of times!
Tisbury School History
The first Tisbury School opened on the 27 January, 1891 with 19 children and was situated about a kilometre east of the present site. The roll grew quickly to 70, and at the beginning of 1892 another building was erected on the present site.
In 1945 a fire destroyed the existing school and the current classroom block was built.
Major alterations were done about 20 years later which included a new boiler house.
The administration area was modernized with a conservatory built in 2001.
As a result of the Network Review of Invercargill schools in 2004, Tisbury School gained another teacher and a new multi- purpose/library room was added on to the east end.
In 2007 the four classrooms were extensively refurbished.
In 2009 the car park was extended with a drive through pick up/drop off area included.
Present Day
Tisbury School today has four classrooms, an attractive administration area staffroom and conservatory, a multi-purpose library and a varied and interesting playground.
It is a contributing school educating children from Years 1 to 6 (Ages 5 to 11 years). Our children come from a mix of farms, both sheep and dairy, life style blocks and suburban areas. About a quarter of our children come to school on the school bus.
Being situated on the outskirts of Invercargill allows us access to city facilities whilst keeping a rural atmosphere. We easily access sporting, cultural and educational programmes, we are able to access specialized child services for children with learning and/or behavioural difficulties and offer reading recovery.
We are a Character Education school and we believe in the importance of citizenship for our children. Each term we concentrate on one of the 8 important values; Respect, Responsibility, Kindness, Duty, Honesty and Truthfulness, Obedience, Consideration and Compassion.
We are developing in the children a range of thinking skills, alongside using a range of ICT technologies to prepare them for success in the 21st century.
We also are developing in the children the 16 Habits of Mind of successful people.
We have a structured behaviour and discipline policy and guidelines, a copy of which is at the back of this booklet.

Services Provided
SCHOOL BUS
Our school bus route goes along Gorge Road Highway to Longbush Road South. It then travels back along Welsh/Motu-Rimu/Tiwai and Boundary Roads. In the afternoon it also travels Kent and Bluff Roads.
The bus picks up children in the morning from 8am arriving at school approximately 8.25am. This bus has both primary and secondary children on it. In the afternoon the bus leaves school at 2.45pm and carries just the primary children.
The service is run by McDermott Coachlines.
In certain circumstances a transport allowance is able to be applied for.
CANTEEN
We run a canteen at school. A list of what is available and prices can be found at the back of this information booklet. Please send the money in an envelope with the order and your child’s name and room number on the front.
On the first Friday of every month children can order fish and chips.
On the third Friday of each month there is a sausage sizzle. The profit from this goes to help subsidize the children’s sports fees.
STATIONERY
We hold all the stationery your child will require and you can purchase this from the office.
At the beginning of the year we offer stationery at a reduced price.
RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION
Religious instruction is held 8.50 till 9.20 each Thursday for Rooms 3 and 4. If you do not wish your child to be involved, please inform us so we can make alternative arrangements. Religious Instruction is not mandatory.
SUNHATS
{file://localhost/Users/teacher/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems/msoclip1/01/clip_image031.jpg} We are a Sun Safe School and as part of this we require the children to wear the Tisbury sunhat in terms 1 and 4. These sunhats can be purchased from the office.
SPORTS UNIFORM
Our sports uniform consists of the Tisbury polo shirt and black shorts. We wear our sports uniform at Southern Zone outings as well as when playing in a sports team. The polo shirt is also worn whenever children are representing the school on other occasions.
The polo shirt can be purchased at the office.
There is a separate rugby jersey that belongs to the school and is worn for Moffett Cup.
DENTAL NURSE
We do not have a dental clinic on site. Our children go to the Fernworth School dental clinic.
The dental nurse will make your child’s appointments, however, if you do have a problem please phone us and we can give you the dental clinic’s contact details.
HEALTH NURSE/VISION HEARING TESTING
The Health Nurse visits the school every second Thursday. If you have any concerns about your child and would like to see the Health Nurse, please contact the office to see when the next visit is scheduled.
The Vision/Hearing testing staff visit the school twice a year. Again, if you have any concerns contact the school office.
AFTER SCHOOL CARE
We do not offer after school care on site, but the YMCA OSCAR van can pick up children from our gate after school each day and take them to the after school programme at St Patricks School, Metzger Street if the numbers warrant it.
Contact the office for more information.
SWIMMING
We having swimming twice a year – 6 lessons at the end of term 1 and 6 lessons at the beginning of term 4. The whole school is involved.
